Courtney Lyle

Courtney Lyle is a co-founder and managing attorney of Independence Law Firm. She helps guide the firm's client experience, operations, culture, and estate-planning services with a focus on compassion, clarity, and family peace of mind.

Courtney's connection to estate planning began when she was very young. After her sister passed away at birth, her family had tender conversations about death, planning, and what would happen if something happened to her parents. Those conversations gave Courtney a sense of comfort and security. Today, she wants to help other families experience that same peace.

Courtney believes estate planning should feel understandable, supportive, and deeply personal. She enjoys helping clients move from uncertainty to confidence by explaining legal concepts in plain English and helping families think through the decisions that matter most. Her background in journalism also shapes the way she works with clients: she listens carefully, asks thoughtful questions, and helps organize complex information in a way that feels clear and manageable.

Courtney graduated with honors from the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law in 2010. During law school, she worked with the Senior Lawyer Volunteer Project at Utah Legal Services and completed an externship with the Honorable Judge William Thorne on the Utah Court of Appeals.

Before law school, Courtney worked as an award-winning journalist. She earned her undergraduate degree in communications from Brigham Young University and, for a time, hosted a news program called Today at BYU on Classical 89 radio.

At Independence Law Firm, Courtney helps ensure that every client feels cared for, not rushed; educated, not overwhelmed; and supported through each step of the planning process. She is especially passionate about helping families understand that estate planning is not just about preparing for death. It is about protecting loved ones, creating clarity, and giving your family the gift of guidance. That's why she worked with Greg to create SafeEstate to help along every step of the estate planning journey, making it more manageable and easy.

When she is not working, Courtney enjoys spending time with her husband, Greg, and their four children. She also loves kayaking, reading, playing games, and enjoying the sunshine.

Courtney's goal is to make estate planning feel less intimidating and more meaningful, so families can move forward with confidence knowing their wishes are clear and their loved ones are protected.
